I remember, back when I was still in preschool, my teacher would always ask, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Everyone starts raising their hands while shouting what they want. I hear everyone very eager to share. From behind me I hear Jesse shout, "Teacher, I want to be a doctor!" On my right I hear Mika shouting, "I want to be an astronaut!" And on my left I hear Jen shouting, "I want to be a scientist!" Amidst all the commotion around me, I tried to compete with all the shouting. Of course, I did not want to be outweighed by my other classmates. So there I was shouting at the top of my lungs, "Teacher, I want to be a nurse." Plot twist: I am currently a Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) student. Crazy right? I'm a HUMSS student and yet I want to be a nurse. But that was back when I was younger. You might be asking, "What made you change your mind?" I would like to let you know that I REGRET being in HUMSS strand...
Here are the reasons why you should NEVER choose the HUMSS strand:
1. Upon enrolling under the HUMSS strand, you seal your fate of not receiving a high salary. It might also seem that it will be impossible for you to get rich. All you get are thank yous, smiles and the accomplishment of being able to help those in need. Seriously, nobody wants that. Where's the fun in that, right?
3. Readings, readings, and readings. We are usually given tons and tons of reading materials. Not only do we simply read it but we need to understand them thoroughly. What’s the point in reading all of these articles where we learn new things from? I mean it just doesn’t increase our vocabulary and knowledge, does it?
Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) is a strand offered in senior high school that studies the human behaviour and interaction in social, cultural, environmental, economic and political contexts. This strand is usually given too much stereotypes such as that it is the "easiest" strand among all. Humanities and Social Sciences students are often looked down upon for taking the HUMSS strand instead of the more popular ones such as Science,Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) or Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM). These other strands are believed to be the right strand to success AKA to earn lots of money. To be honest, who does not want to earn a lot of money, right?
I would like to reiterate that I DO regret being in the HUMSS strand when all I did back then was to search and appreciate the career paths in other strands. What I am trying to say is that I should have learned more about the HUMSS strand back when I was younger. Nevertheless, I am proud to say that I know that I am in the right strand. The strand where I don't get paid so much high that I forget
the real meaning of being able to help others. The strand where I get to learn and reflect from the events of the past which helped us turn into what we are today.
