I remember, back when I was still in preschool, my teacher would always ask, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Everyone starts raising their hands while shouting what they want. I hear everyone very eager to share. From behind me I hear Jesse shout, "Teacher, I want to be a doctor!" On my right I hear Mika shouting, "I want to be an astronaut!" And on my left I hear Jen shouting, "I want to be a scientist!" Amidst all the commotion around me, I tried to compete with all the shouting. Of course, I did not want to be outweighed by my other classmates. So there I was shouting at the top of my lungs, "Teacher, I want to be a nurse." Plot twist: I am currently a Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) student. Crazy right? I'm a HUMSS student and yet I want to be a nurse. But that was back when I was younger. You might be asking, "What made you change your mind?" I would like to let you know that I REGRET being in HUMSS strand...
Here are the reasons why you should NEVER choose the HUMSS strand:
1. Upon enrolling under the HUMSS strand, you seal your fate of not receiving a high salary. It might also seem that it will be impossible for you to get rich. All you get are thank yous, smiles and the accomplishment of being able to help those in need. Seriously, nobody wants that. Where's the fun in that, right?
3. Readings, readings, and readings. We are usually given tons and tons of reading materials. Not only do we simply read it but we need to understand them thoroughly. What’s the point in reading all of these articles where we learn new things from? I mean it just doesn’t increase our vocabulary and knowledge, does it?
Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) is a strand offered in senior high school that studies the human behaviour and interaction in social, cultural, environmental, economic and political contexts. This strand is usually given too much stereotypes such as that it is the "easiest" strand among all. Humanities and Social Sciences students are often looked down upon for taking the HUMSS strand instead of the more popular ones such as Science,Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) or Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM). These other strands are believed to be the right strand to success AKA to earn lots of money. To be honest, who does not want to earn a lot of money, right?
I would like to reiterate that I DO regret being in the HUMSS strand when all I did back then was to search and appreciate the career paths in other strands. What I am trying to say is that I should have learned more about the HUMSS strand back when I was younger. Nevertheless, I am proud to say that I know that I am in the right strand. The strand where I don't get paid so much high that I forget
the real meaning of being able to help others. The strand where I get to learn and reflect from the events of the past which helped us turn into what we are today.
What happen then? Right after you regret on choosing a humss strand I think I am feeling the same way just like on what you have been through I am also in HUMSS strand that dreaming to be a nurse someday do I can still pursue that dream even where in the same strand?
ReplyDeleteSame, I Feel the same way here, I want to become a nurse one day ,And also I'm taking HUMMS strand here, hays i dont know what to do,,
DeleteI've always wanted to be a cardiologist but I was always told that I wouldn't have any hope in STEM, so they all encouraged me to take HUMSS because it apparently fit me more but now i'm on my way to college and feeling very hopeless because I realized that this really isn't the life I want. lMAO i shouldn't have doubted myself so much back then : (
DeleteI’m an incoming g11 student and i still can’t decide on what strand should i take, i mean i want to take nursing but i enrolled in HUMMS coz want to overcome my social anxiety. I don’t know what to choose, should i shift my strand? or can HUMMS student take Med in college.?

DeleteYou shouldn't take humss😭 you will just regret it like me
DeleteHi! I’m also a Humss student and at first I want to be a Teacher that is why I’m here, my sister inspired me to so I decided to take up humss. But recently napag isip kung mag take ng nursing as a college course, okay lang ba as a humss student na nursing yung kunin?
ReplyDeleteSame thoughts
DeleteSo far, I don't think so .but now I choose this issue as my Research topic.
Deletehello! i have the same thoughts as yours. so, did you take up nursing right now?
Deletesana masagot ganyan din case ko as of now
ReplyDeleteAko ren may sagot na po ba?
DeleteIs it possible kaya?!hindi ba mahihirapan kung Humss ka tas nagtake ka ng nursing?kasi diba more on history yung yung pinag-aaralan sa humss at konting science and math samantalang for sure kapag nagnursing ka puno yon ng math and science?!kaya kaya yon?
ReplyDeleteIbang iba, kasi sa Stem na strand more on Science and topic at yun ang kailangan sa college , kaya ikaw rin mahihirapan ,kasi kapag nag turo baka di mo alam ang lesson or mga tinuturo ang HUMMS kasi more on history ibabalik sa nakaraan ang lahat hays
DeleteGusto ko din nursing but i took HUMSS.. helppp.
DeleteIm planning to take nursing or med-tech as my pre-med kaso, HUMSS ako ngayon kasi ang first choice ko is Journalism and that was before kaya ako nag-enroll doon.
ReplyDeletesame
DeleteOriginally STEM pero takot ako sa MATH at sa MATH lang, then transferred to HUMSS but since I want to improve my skills in socializing so meh little did I know that I'd regret my decision. Btw saw you on a reddit thread.
DeleteWere the same I am aslo HUMSS STUDENTS. Since I was in grade 2 my teacher want me to become a teacher soon. So the way I proceed every level so now I alwmays brinning it . I am interesting with the Nursing aid but I know nurse just for STEM.

ReplyDeleteIn my case, undecided kasi ako nung grade 10 so sabi ko humss nalang easy lang yun pero guess what? Pamatay dre you need to understand everything talaga para may maanswer sa modules
ReplyDeleteIt was my first choice but I got lost and started doubting myself in grade 10, so I ended up in HUMSS thinking that it was a safe space for me
ReplyDeleteme na grade 9 palang tapos balak mag take ng HUMSS sa shs tapos eto mababasa ko :'( now im confused. sos
ReplyDeleteSame i also regret in taking humms and I want to be nurse and grade 11 pa Lang nmn ako ,pwede ka yang mag iba ng strands sa grade 12?
ReplyDeleteyou might have to take summer classes and extra classes when you're in grade 12 if you decide to shift !! : (
Deletehi! i'm going to graduate grade 12 in a few months and my career counselor told me that a lot of schools here in the Philippines aren't very strict about what senior high school strand you take. Some schools offer summer classes before college starts, so I suggest you all give it a try! I'm currently applying for 2 med schools here in Cebu and one school told me that the only thing that matters is my hs grades :' )
ReplyDelete(ALSO the schools i'm applying for don't offer summer classes, so i'll have to study by myself over summer hahahsa sana nag stem nalang talaga ako <//3)
DeleteI’m in grade 10 and still undecided if mag STEM ba ako. I want to be a nurse too. Balak ko sana mag HUMMS ng shs then mag take ako ng nursing in college. Wag ko na ba ituloy mag HUMMS?
ReplyDeleteHi! Ang hirap 'no? 'Yan din ang balak ko eh. Siguro mas mabuti kung mag STEM ka nalang. More on science kasi ang STEM.
DeleteI’m in grade 10 and still undecided if mag STEM ba ako. I want to be a nurse too. Balak ko sana mag HUMMS ng shs then mag take ako ng nursing in college. Wag ko na ba ituloy mag HUMMS?
ReplyDeleteanong mangyayari if engineering course ang kukunin for college and then nag Humss ka? omg:<
ReplyDeleteYes, pwedeng maging math or science teacher ka.
Deletegraduating na ako this year and i want to take nuring in college but naalala ko HUMSS student nga pala ako and balak ko sa De La Salle mag college. gulong gulo na ako HAHAHAHAHAH
ReplyDeleteI'm incoming g11 student, already enrolled as HUMSS student but after ko mabasa itong article,I think i'll shift into STEM,since i'll take nursing as my college course.
ReplyDeleteHello, do you have any updates so far?
DeleteI hope you can reply to me, I'm struggling to make a decision. The problem is my preferred strand (ABM) is not offered from our school. The only choices I have are STEM & HUMMS. My question is which should I take?
DeleteJust choose a school na may bridging program
ReplyDeletewhat if yung kaisa isang public univ sa lugar niyo is walang bridging program at gusto mong magtake ng nursing kahit nag humss ka?
ReplyDeletehello! hehe ako po yung nagpost ng comment neto yung ashiecaraig, i passed the college application last week lang and sa next school year im a bs nursing student :D

ReplyDeleteI hope you can reply to me, I'm struggling to make a decision. The problem is my preferred strand (ABM) is not being offered from our school. The only choices I have are STEM & HUMMS. My question is which one should I take?
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a Junior High school student, I really wanted to be a nurse, I would have taken STEM as a strand, but I was scared, so eventually I went to HUMSS, because at HUMSS I could learn to get along with other people, so I just took HUMSS, but I deeply regret it. Now, I'm incoming grade 12, but I don't know what to do, will I move to another strand or I'm just here in HUMSS total I've already started it. Can you tell me what is the possible job at HUMSS Strand?
ReplyDeleteHello I'm a grade 12 student this school year and I have same situation problem but in my case I don't want to be a nurse I just want to be a radtech or a medtech someday but the problem is ... I got the wrong strad I'm taking HUMSS the strad the I don't know to make my dream come true besides I want to be a good doctor someday can you help me to decide what I'm going to do??
ReplyDeleteUpdate po Kasi I'm planning also to pursue yung radtech na course pero currently humss po Yung strand ko
DeleteI'm not alone pala. I'm incoming Grade 10 student and is currently having a dilemma on choosing my strand for Senior High. I greatly want to pursue Nursing sa College but I badly want HUMSS as my strand on SHS. I really want to learn debates, speak more confidently and improve my writing skills. Siguro, I see HUMSS as that strand that can really evolve me to a better person. But, considering my aiming profession, STEM's the great strand to choose. Taking STEM would really be an advantage since more Maths and Sciences and ofcourse sa entrance examinations in Univs.. College would be, I think, much easier if I'll choose STEM. Another thing, the school that I'm attending now only offers ABM and STEM. That's plus points for STEM and minus points for HUMSS. Id say that my current school's a great school. People around me also are discouraging me to transfer kasi nga daw my current school can give me wider oppurtunities in finding Univs, which is guaranteed. I'm so torn right now. I have many questions in mind. I'm afraid to have regrets in the future though I realized na I will eventually have it coz I just have to choose one strand. Yet, I dont want to just pick my strand outmindedly. I just hope that my choice would be really worth of the sacrifice and kinda regrets Ill be having. Does someone have any advice???
ReplyDeletehiii!!! do you have any advicesss??? huhu, my current school already opened the SHS enrollment. im still so confused 😭 help meee👉👈
DeleteSo apparently, I decided to choose STEM already. T'was really a hard decision for me. I have waited for signs and those signs led me on choosing STEM. Just praying and manifesting that I chose the right strand. 🥺🥺🥺 Pero my HUMSS heart is till grieving.
Deletehi i was just curious coz im thinking just now that these "strands" are limiting the choices of the children... of our future... say, if a person is determined to become a nurse then there comes perseverance in reaching that goal, on the other hand, it might be helpful to the children who are undecided on which path to choose... i disagree with you though on the thoughts of "not being rich" i am a social worker and i am earning way above minimum, i have a car, a house and the good thing is my job is helping people yet i am also able to support my family in a good way.... if you happen to target earning 100k a month then you need to work hard in achieving it... being rich depends on your attitude ive known people who dont have a degree yet they are "rich" be inspired... researchers earn way better than employees... in life what matters is if you are happy with your chosen career coz money cant guarantee that okeiz just be wise
ReplyDeleteI'm currently in grade 11. Law sana kukunin ko in college that's why I chose the strand HUMSS, pero nabago yung isip ko, parang mas gusto ko mag accountancy. Is it possible ba na makakapag accountancy pa ako?
DeleteMe too i want to take a nursing courses but.. humss kinuha ko , pano natu huhu.
ReplyDeleteI want to be a pediatrician but I discouraging my self because I think that I'm not good enough to take the STEM strand. Well maybe God has another purpose for me, I'm still waiting to find that out.
ReplyDeleteOmg i just saw this, I'm currently a grade 10 student. And i want to be a nurse too, undecided ako kung ano yung pipiliin kong strand. And I'm thinking of taking HUMSS. Help me decide if someone else see this.
ReplyDeleteTake on STEM,and I'm undecided student like you, but people around me, like my friends, tells you won't regret taking the stem strand, some others also tell that STEM was hard, stressful, etc. but taking this strand will give you the biggest advantage when you go to the field of nursing, it's better to sharpen your knowledge with hardship for the next 2 year of your school journey, thus you'll get a benefit from it,when you are at college

I choose to be on stem but due to my low grades i ended up taking humms. If only our school has more strand than just 2 I would've choosen abm. And only if my family has the money i would've transfered to other school
ReplyDeleteI want to be a nurse also and I take Humss. It is okay if I take Nursing in College
